- Cloudy Water
If your pool water is cloudy and you cannot clear up the problem, check to see if the pH level is within the proper range. If it is, check the filter for dirt. Be sure your sanitizer is in the correct range; raise the level if needed. - Filter Maintenance
You should clean your pool filter periodically to remove dirt. Grease, oils, and scale can also leave harmful residues on your filter and cause it to work improperly. - Routine Shock Treatment
Be sure to give your pool a routine shock treatment to destroy combined chlorine compounds like hair spray, suntan oil, cosmetics, and perspiration. - Chemical Treatment
If you have just given your pool a chemical treatment, the general rule of thumb is to wait about 15 minutes to one hour before entering the pool. Time is needed for the chlorine level to drop to the recommended level. - Ring Cleaning
Clean unsightly rings around your pool with a tile cleaner designed specifically for use in pools. Many household cleaners do not contain the needed balance of both oil/grease cutters and scale dissolving ingredients to get the job done.

- Sanitizer Level
Never enter a spa or hot tub unless the sanitizer level is adequate to keep the water healthy and free from harmful microorganisms. - Storing Chemicals
Chemicals, additives and cleaning compounds for your spa should be stored in a cool, dry, and well ventilated location - away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children. - Drugs and Alcohol Guidelines
Hot water in your spa heightens the effects of alcohol and certain drugs. Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages in a hot tub or spa. Consult your doctor regarding the use of prescription drugs. - Time and Temperature
Soaking for too long in elevated water temperatures of a hot tub can raise body heat to hazardous levels. The National Spa and Pool Institute considers 104° F to be the maximum safe water temperature for adults. - Guidelines For Children and Infants
Children and infants should be supervised at all times around a hot tub or spa. It is best to introduce them to a hot tub or spa slowly, giving them time to adjust to the change in temperature and to alleviate fear or discomfort.
- Be sure you know your skin type and the appropriate amount of time needed to gain the proper tan
- Use a reliable tanning lotion designed specifically for use with tanning beds
- Do not let your skin get burnt as a result of too much tanning
- Once you establish your base tan, you should continue tanning two times per week
- Eat foods rich in beta-carotene - they will help you to retain your tan longer
- Always wear eye protection when using a tanning bed
- Use low-emission wood burning hearth products
- Build small fires using seasoned wood or manufactured logs
- Upgrade your traditional fireplace by installing an EPA-certified insert or a pellet fireplace insert
- Open the damper so that it is wide enough to ensure proper oxygen supply to the fire
- Leave a thin layer of ash for insulation.
- Crumple a few sheets of nonglossy white paper or uncolored newspaper, and add some small pieces of kindling, then light
- Be sure to use a ceramic glass front. Ceramic glass does a much better job of transmitting infrared heat from the flame to the room than the tempered glass. Ceramic glass is also shatter resistant.
- Have a quiet, squirrel-cage type circulating fan added to the fireplace to force convective heat into the room.
- Be sure to have an insulated outer casing, except if you have a freestanding unit. This casing type prevents heat loss through the walls of the home when a fireplace is located on an exterior wall.
- Gas-log fireplaces come with either a standing pilot light (one that remains lit) or with an electronic ignition. The electronic-ignition models are much more energy efficient because they burn only when they are turned on.
- Be sure to periodically clean the logs, embers and glass doors for better efficiency
- Regularly clean the fan and related air circulation passage
- Check the batteries in your carbon monoxide tester
